STARS is proud to announce that they have partnered with Molina Healthcare and Hidden Harvest to provide 200 wheeled grocery carts to make grocery shopping easier and safer for bus riders. Molina Healthcare will present a check to STARS to support this effort on October 5 at 11:45AM in the STARS Plaza, 615 Johnson St.
“Many of our riders depend on STARS to navigate the Saginaw City food desert, but we realize that using STARS to grocery shopping can still be a challenge. To keep travel safe, we have a four-bag limit on our vehicles.” said Jamie Forbes, Director of External Affairs at STARS. “Wire grocery carts are a safe and convenient way for our riders to transport groceries, so we are thankful to be working with Molina and Hidden Harvest to get them in the hands of our riders.”
“As a healthcare organization, we know just how important access to healthy food is overall health. When STARS came to us about the challenges their riders face grocery shopping, we wanted to step up and help,” said Amanda Forsmark, Sr. Specialist of Community Engagement at Molina Healthcare.
With the help of community volunteers, Hidden Harvest will be filling each cart with food and community resources. Meijer has also donated gift cards for distribution. Recipients of the grocery carts have been identified by STARS Staff and Community Partners with distribution on October 6th from 11AM-7PM and October 8th from 8:30AM-5PM. Individuals that would use a grocery cart on STARS services should email their name, phone number and address to jforbes@saginaw-stars.com.
